Supported Employment

Our supported employment service is designed to put people into regular employment and help them to stay there. We use a combination of services like job development and job coaching to help you achieve your employment goals:

Job Development

Before we can find you a job we need to get to know you a bit. Our staff will take the time to learn about what your interests are, what kind of work you’ve already done and what your strengths and talents are. We’ll also work with you to discover what extra support you’ll need both in the job search and once you are working.

You will help your Supported Employment Specialist create a Plan for Employment to outline the steps you will take together to find a job. Though your plan will be unique to you, common activities include:

  • Creating a resume
  • Filling out applications
  • Finding resources to gain work-related skills, such as computer skills
  • Practicing interview questions
  • Visiting area businesses to learn more about a career or field

Job Coaching

Once you get a job, you may want a job coach with you to help you learn on-the-job, or you may just want some extra assistance off-site. Job coaches can help you:

  • Fill out paperwork
  • Read and understand job descriptions and duties
  • Create unique tools to help you on the job
  • Set up transportation
  • Report your earnings to the appropriate agencies

The job coach is there to set you on the road to independence. Eventually, as you start to master the skills to do your job, the job coach will “fade away.” This doesn’t mean we won’t be around to help, though!

Other Services

There are lots of ways to get started with your journey to employment. You may be eligible to perform a trial work experience, called a work evaluation, for a few weeks to see how you do. You might also be interested in job shadowing someone who works in a job you would like to learn more about, or in starting your own business. The Supported Employment staff members are always ready to exercise their creativity to help you find your future job.
